Vail music festival under way

The Rochester Philharmonic swept into town on a warm Russian breeze for the season opener on Sunday night.

The evening was a tribute to Tchaikovsky, and featured several favorites, including Romeo and Juliet, Francesca Da Rimini and the Symphonic Fantasy Concerto No. 1 in B-Flat Minor, performed by the 29-year-old Russian pianist Olga Kern, gold medallist in the 2001 Van Cliburn competition.
Kern's great, great grandmother was a friend of Tchaikovsky, and her great grandmother sang with Rachmaninoff.
Meanwhile, the summer of Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival has arrived in all its melodic splendor to the Ford Amphitheater. Supporters and symphony members convened at Manor Vail for a post-concert reception. The Manor Vail pulled out all the stops, with an extensive seafood buffet, carving station, and dessert table.
Manor Vail and One Willow Bridge Road underwrote the evening. One Willow Bridge Road is a multi-million development that will take the location of the Swiss Hotel and Spa in Vail Village.
The Sonnenalp Resort will manage the 23 luxury condominiums opening in December 2005. The complex is being developed by Daedalus Real Estate Advisors and marketed by Sonnenalp Real Estate.
As a special gift from One Willow Bridge Road, each guest received a split of Veuve Clicquot Ponsardin Champagne.
Maestro Christopher Seaman was enthusiastic about the symphony's return to the Vail Valley.
"It's the second home of the Rochester philharmonic," he said with his sparkling smile. "We love the venue, and the public shows its appreciation."
