Music raises money for music

The weather cooperated - sort of.
Although a summer night in July should be toasty warm, both ladies and men shivered as the New York Philharmonic opened at Vail. Hot or cold, damp or dry, it was a "Night to Remember."

The Lodge at Vail hosted the Bravo! Gala for the 17th season of the music festival, under the watchful eyes of chairpersons Jayne and Paul Becker, Cookie and Jim Flaum, and Doug and Dhuanne Tansill.
The evening benefited Bravo!'s education program, "Music Matters", which supports the festival's efforts to enhance awareness and appreciation for classical music and to foster family and community unity. Those programs include "Live at the Library"; free family concert; an instrument petting zoo and school programs in both Eagle and Lake County.
Bravo!'s Jason Denhart said he was happy with the evening.
"We're pleased everyone had a good time... it's a great kick of the New York Philharmonic," he said. "We're glad the patrons came out to support the educational programs of Bravo in its 17th Season."
Bravo! supporter Phil Smiley concurred.
"The concert was beautiful, and the friendships in this group of people are wonderful," Smiley said. "None of this would be possible without the relationship with the people of Vail."
Business was minimal, but guests enjoyed the silent auction, sponsored by One Willow Bridge Road, a new development scheduled for Vail Village.
Up for bid were a "dine around the valley" package; a 2005 Bravo! package; a plan-your-own-dinner party with the Joe Peterson Dance Orchestra, Mountain Catering, Riverwalk Wine, Any Occasion and Blossoms of Vail; tickets for a New York Philharmonic performance at Lincoln Center and dinner with Eugenia Zukerman; and a Dallas package - Hotel Crescent Court, Dallas Symphony and dinner for two at Nick and Sam's courtesy of Jim and Marilyn Augur and many, many more.
After dinner, only one package was auctioned off by Master of Ceremonies Steve Pope: the chance to conduct the symphony, ably handled this year by Jack Kemp.
After heated bidding between Bob Hernreich, Oscar Tang and Sheika Gramshammer, Hernreich walked away with the honor for a cool $25,000. Guess he'll be expecting a standing ovation next year.
After the auction, the Bob Finnie Band kicked into action with one of Vail's favorites, Kathy Morrow, singing.
Vail Resorts underwrote the gala and Chalone Wine Foundation donated the wine.
