Golf event will raise funds to help at-risk youth

Positively Speaking Foundation, a non-profit organization founded by former Arizona Cardinals player Ray Perkins in June 2002, works with underprivileged and atrisk youth.

An annual golf tournament is a major fund-raiser for the foundation ? which sponsors various youth camps and educates kids on the dangers of drugs and alcohol and the advantage of staying in school. This year?s event is scheduled for April 16 at Longbow Golf Course in Mesa. Cost is $120 and sponsorships are also available.

PSF has a free football clinic scheduled for May 14 at Arizona State for ages 8-18. Campers will receive a T-shirt, meet celebrities and be treated to lunch. A summer camp in Pinetop is also scheduled for June 6-9 for boys ages 13-18. PSF will pay half the costs.

? Phoenix Suns All-Star Amare Stoudemire will host his second annual youth camp from June 27-30 at Desert Ridge High School in Mesa. Stoudemire will be joined by some of the league?s premier players and coaches, the nation?s top college and high school coaches, along with basketball instructors from national basketball programs. RUNNING

TRACK AND FIELD

? A Hershey track and field meet will be at 6 p.m. April 29 at Highland High School. The national program designed for children born 1991-1998 features running events at 50, 100, 200, 400, 800, 1,600 meters and the 400 relay. Field events include the softball throw and standing long jump. Registration is being accepted through April 26 at the Gilbert Parks and Recreation office at 70 E. Civic Center Dr. Entry fee is $3 per event for Gilbert residents and $4.50 per event for non-residents, with no more than two running events permitted. Children who finish in first or second place in their event will be invited to compete in the district track meet May 14 at Saguaro High School in Scottsdale. Call (480) 503-6200.

TENNIS

? Drop-in tennis is offered Monday through Thursday and Saturday at 8:30 a.m. and Sunday at 6:30 p.m. at Mesa?s Gene Autry Sports Complex. Tennis lessons are also available beginning April 11. WRESTLING
